Quest 4
demonstration of self-direction, work ethic, and personal responsibility
College Plan
Though it has become tradition for almost every high school graduate to rapidly move onto college, I am still proud to be going. I plan to go to Colorado Mountain College starting is August. I want to study for an Associates of Science degree and either move onto another college to finish a four year Bachelors degree and beyond, or sign up for the Peace Corps. in between CMC and the next step in schooling. While at CMC I am also interested in the study abroad program, possibly Spain. I want to study the brain, all aspects of it intrigue me but mainly I would love to discover how we have thoughts. It is all electricity and chemicals passing a thought from one neuron to the next, so how does that equal a thought? I am also planning a back up plan if my interest in the brain abates: I could also see my self-pursuing Art, History, Cooking, or a combination of any of them. My first step towards all of this will be taken when my mom’s taxes are finished. I will then be able to turn in my application for CMC and update my information for FAFSA, then August 1st sign up for a full schedule (12 credits) of classes for first semester. I am very excited for the next step in my education whatever it turns out to be. Being happy having a successful, comfortable life is my goal.
Career Plan
I am 17 years old, graduating Yampah Mountain High School, and have no experience with a job. I have mildly searched since I was 13 with no luck other than occasionally babysitting. I plan to find a job this summer, and have already left my name and number numerous places through the valley. Though my top priority is attending Colorado Mountain College to pursue a career in the brain. I would love to find out everything that is already known, and discover as much as possible. Careers that support my dream include: being a Neuroscientist or Psychologist. Popularity of brain science is quickly increasing; the number of universities offering neuroscience courses has increased from 3 in 1989 to over 30 now. Psychology is the study of people: how we think, act, react, and interact. Obviously either of these professions are promising careers. If for some reason I decide on another profession, right now, I would also be interested in art, the connection between art and the brain, history, the connection between art and history, religious history (particularly Greek mythology), and cooking. Though with whatever I choose, I really want to have a chance to travel.

My Birth Story
The due date for my birth was October 3, 1993. In the last month my mom had really high blood pressure and daily nausea. She was ordered to bed rest and to take Tums everyday. While still taking Tums she continued working at her business, meditating every second to calm down her blood pressure. On October 9th my mom’s water broke. She went to the Aspen hospital, and was informed that the contractions she was having were only mild. Given the options of drug induced labor, or going home and waiting, she chose going home and waiting. Five days later on October 13th, in the process of crouching down to put lasagna in the oven the contractions hit her like “a brick wall.” She called her mid wife, who instructed her to get ready in case they got any worse and it wasn’t another false alarm. At 1 AM she woke up my dad. On their way to the hospital again, my mom pleaded to be able to stop at Seven Eleven for Tums. He denied, because of his fear of not making it in time. Once they got to the hospital she was taken care of but they had to keep an eye on me because of her high blood pressure. She refused any sort of drugs, she wanted to experience it the way nature intended and how women have for, “zillions of years.” Instructed to stay on her back, the pain became too much, so she turned over onto her hands and knees while my dad rubbed her lower back. She said it felt so, “primal” the way it all played out. After 4 hours of hard labor, at 5:20 AM, I came out. She thought, “what pain,” once it was all over. I didn’t scream, just looked around wide-eyed. I looked like a little Sage, a wise old soul. I was so beautiful except my skinny legs, looked like a plucked chicken. I was 19.5 inches, 6 pounds and 10 ounces with a black mohawk. They say it was the happiest day of their lives. She stayed in bed while my dad was with me when I was getting shots. The doctor kept missing my arm and my dad thinks that he got some sort of pleasure out of making me experience pain. My dad wanted to knock him out. They came home with me later that night. October 14th, 1993 5:20 AM Sage Kathryn Friel was born.
Pivotal Moments
Mom’s car crash/ Permanent damage:
I was in Kindergarten. My dad came to pick me up from school saying we needed to go to the hospital, he told me the crash was earlier in the morning and I remember asking why he didn’t come get me then, because it would have been an excuse not to be in school. Even at that age I was looking for reasons to not be in school. All I remember is walking up to the bed and holding my moms hand, she was crying. I didn’t understand what happened, but it was bad. She was driving on 82 in mild traffic and some people were pushing their van trying to jump start it, but they were in the lane. She didn’t have a chance to swerve or slow down enough, she hit the people who were pushing, and they died. She has a permanent head injury that causes her to be hyper sensitive to lights and a list of other bull that limits her abilities. Some people aren’t morning people, takes them a bit to get in the groove, but it takes her hours to be able to function. Also, a couple of years later she developed asthma.

My religious and spiritual beliefs
I don’t even know where to start with this. I am not religious to many standards, just because of my past. It has been shoved down my throat, it is based on a time when there was no technology to find out the science of everything around us, the ignorance used to persuade people, the ignorance they defend to death, the fact there has been war since the time we have been intelligent enough to share and disagree. I don’t believe there is some guy sitting up in the clouds and if you suck up enough to him that you get what you want, if anything this so called God is all around us in everything. But not God as a person, as energy. If you put out good energy and always help to balance the world, you in turn will feel a balance of your self and feel good and healthy. This is what pisses me off the most: we are all labels now. Period. According to religion and all that bull you always have a label, if you choose not to believe or care about it you are an agnostic, if you hate it because of whatever reason, you are atheist... this world has made it so no matter what, you are always labeled with a religion. Even if you CHOOSE to not go along with something, it doesn’t matter you are always something. That, my dear friend is some thing I will always call bull shit on
My definition of beauty
I think beauty is skin deep, there has to be another word for what is inside. I think it is so cliché when anyone says, “you have a beautiful soul” or whatever. Though I’m sure I would enjoy the compliment if directed at me. I think it is not fair to judge anyone on natural looks, though I still do. Though there is another aspect of beauty: someone’s actions. If you are self confident, be your self even when unsure of others’ reactions, and genuinely care and/or are trustworthy. This aspect is not factored in as often as it should be, which makes many people be fake in hopes of seeming more attractive to someone they favor.
